I very much like the specification that due to our five senses, we’re mostly attached to applying the label of “beautiful” to things that just happen to filter to our brains through them — but that “beauty” can apply to other things as well, data that makes it into our brains in different ways, like knowing.
I am trying not to respond to this lovely idea with a snarky bitchslap to artists who think that science “ruins” beauty, but it’s not easy. In fact, by making that observation out loud, I think I just failed. Sort of Schroedinger’s Bitchslap.
