It’s because, like with jazz, academic white people latched onto it and sucked the life out of it to compete with one another on who was more “woke” rather than to actually understand what it was describing.
Intersectionality is now mostly white women using it as a weapon to prove that they’re The Nicest White Lady at the Country Club™ just as jazz is now mostly middle-aged white men wigging out on saxophones they can’t actually play.
BTW, that crack about fighting over who gets to wear the tiara of The Nicest White Lady in the Room is what people mean when they say “virtue-signaling,” and yes it’s very, very real. It’s a shame that we can’t admit that there are ways in which “identity politics” is used as a means for white people to use minorities as clubs to beat other white people up with for the great honor of getting that tiara.
I don’t think anyone on the left wouldn’t admit that there is a lot of that shit floating around sometimes. We’ll express incredible frustration at the offensively arrogant nature of Bernie Bros, for example, and not realize that when a lot of ordinary WWC folks talk about lefty assholes playing “identity politics,” very often they are also complaining about those sorts as well. This is one of the reasons why I think it’s so important for white liberals to STFU and start backing black liberals for public office rather than magnanimously appointing themselves the sainted savior for all minorities. When poor and working-class white people and minorities talk directly, often more understanding can be had than when “latte liberals” try to shoehorn themselves in between and play umpire for the conversation.
The amazing thing is that it’s the “latte liberals” and Berners who fetishize the WWC as well. The levels of irony here are like something out of an Escher drawing.
