This had stalled, mostly because I’d assumed it would be a duet between viola and violin, and since the orchestration is pretty spare, that left very little for the piano to do without sounding like it was muscling the voices aside.
I wonder if I can’t make it a duet between one string and the piano? The natural choice is violin and piano, since the ear will expect the higher notes to be off the keyboard. It could still be played on a viola though, for the darker tones. But I think that whenever I finally migrate back to that, I’ll pull the contralto voice onto the keyboard and leave Sesto up there in F#.
