… and no bow past the middle third on the C string. It’s not ideal, but this is a viola, not its Barbie-scale sibling. It is exhausting for me to hold my scroll arm up as far as I need to to play this thing in “proper” position — a.k.a pretending it’s a violin.
This is my choice for now going forward. Annoying, but necessary. If I scale down to a smaller instrument at any point (which I may if that pseudo-Baroque thing is doable in 15″), I might be able to use a shoulder rest and bow better, but right now, no. The difference in my stamina between putting it on my shoulder and putting it forward is night and day.
